This was a beautiful and deeply insightful analysis of one of my favorite books/movies. Thank you so much for sharing your insights. They really touched me on a personal level.
I have an odd relationship to King. I do not like most of his books and I won’t (can’t?) watch most of the movies based on his books. I think it’s because it’s often young people/children who are in peril, and evil seems to win out in his stories. Both of those things deeply upset me, even though like yourself, I have always loved spooky things from a young age.
But The Shining is different. For one, it’s the first book of his that I read. I loved how deeply it drew you into the main characters inner life. I felt immersed in the story, as though it were my own. And Kubrick’s movie, though not told as a personal story like the books, was so masterfully crafted and deeply wrong that even though it was horrific on a grand scale, it was also oddly beautiful. Evil can be that, and it’s one of it’s most horrifying aspects.
Anyway, thank you again for sharing how both sides of the The Shining coin spoke to you. I’ve been reading numerous things on your blog and really enjoy your gift with words.

Well thank you so much for your thoughtful and personal response. I often feel like I’m throwing words into the void and it’s rewarding to see that a real person caught them. 🙂

I recently read the book for the first time, and I was trying to decide whether to watch the movie, so I appreciate your analysis and comparison.
I think I’ll pass on the movie. The book was horrific enough!
